Aegean Sea gets hotter


Russia delivered the S-300 missiles that caused real dispute between Turkey and Greece in the end. However the missiles couldn't achieve any aim suggested except for a big advertisement.
The aim for Moscow to sign a missile agreement in 1996 with the Greek Cypriots was to be active in the Mediterranean and make Cyprus a Russian base in long term. Russia would then be able to challenge the US, which has already established the system it wanted in the international field.
However Russia failed it plans as, the missiles located in Crete. Moscow's one other target was to be one of the actors of the peace process in Cyprus. While the missiles were produced, Russia started diplomatic initiations, sending its representatives to the region and bringing about new peace plans. However, this plan failed as well. Moreover, Russia became the one increasing the tension by helping Greece for arming.
Russia insisted on that the selling of the missiles was a commercial agreement. In a sense, it achieved to create a kind of a crisis, and Turkey and Russia had a tense period. Moscow showed reaction against Ankara, as it declared it won't let the missiles to pass Dardanelles.
