Ankara explosion: At least 34 killed, 125 wounded

At least 34 people were killed and 125 others were wounded after an explosion in the Turkish capital Ankara on Sunday, Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu announced in a press conference.

A car bomb exploded between two buses and the explosion targeted the Kızılay district’s transportation hub of bus and minibus stops, and the central metro station. Fire units and ambulances were rushed to the scene as police have closed the area in case there is a second blast. The explosion took place 150 meters away from the Prime Ministry and the Justice and Education Ministry buildings.

Health Minister Müezzinoğlu made statement after an emergency security meeting. Müezzinoğlu said 125 people were wounded, 19 of them were in critical condition. He said that 30 people died at the scene of the incident, while the other four others died on way to the hospitals.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke with the Interior Minister Ala by phone about the blast. Erdoğan condemned the attack in a written statement saying, “Turkey has become a target of terror attacks due to the instabilities in the region. They target our innocent citizens in the most depraved way. Turkey will continue its determined fight against terrorism.”
