While Turkey shakes with March 1999 early election and election government debates, following talks between Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal, it was reported that the Prime Minister tries to feel pulses for holding of unified elections in November. The reports also say that the Higher Board of Election (YSK) gave him an unexpected response.
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz talked about an election to be held in November 1998 in his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and YSK President Tufan Algan, said the reports. According to sources, Mr. Algan stressed that it is impossible to hold an election this year also adding: "Even if the Parliament approves we will cancel it." Reportedly Mr. Yilmaz seeks ground for an earlier election because of the unclear election government, although he had an agreement with the CHP leader to hold two election together in 1999.
Mr. Algan rejected Mr. Yilmaz and said "We can't hold such an election before May" showing "technical inadequeties" as an excuse even for the March elections.
Mr. Alkan gave the following answer to Mesut Yilmaz: "If the political developments bring the government to this point there can be no such election. There is no enough personnel and technical equipment. Because of the seasonal factors it may not be a healty election. Thus as we have the authority we can ommit such a decision even if taken by the parliament."
