55% of the people who live in Istanbul live perpetually in debt, and
68% are in economic hardship. A study carried out by sociologist Prof. Emre
Kongar upon request of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO), titled "The
lifestyle and the problems of the population in Istanbul," reveals the
economic, social and cultural profile of the dwellers of Istanbul.
According to the results of the survey Prof. Kongar applied on 2097
residents in 32 different districts of Istanbul, only 19% of the people who
live in Istanbul can spare money for savings. 44% of families are selling
articles in order to survive, and 60% shop in instalments.
ITO Chairman Mehmet Yildirim, who presented the results of the survey,
stressed that 98% of the residents in Istanbul recognised the existence of
bribery. "Istanbul is the place people learn about immorality," Yildirim
said. He also accentuated that the number of natives were a lot less than
those coming in from other cities. "That's why the majority of people feel
like guests in this city."
Prof. Kongar, said politics in Istanbul thrived on the mission of destroying
its physical and metropolitan treasures, and that most residents did not
feel themselves a part of the city. "The city is falling apart, soon we will
drown in sewage and rubbish," Kongar said.
