Joint declaration

Joint declaration

While the 20th of July festivities of Peace and Freedom are being
celebrated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a joint
message was issued from the Turkish and the Cypriot governments that efforts
to unite will be accelerated. Rauf Denktas, President of TRNC, Bulent
Ecevit, PM of Turkey, and Dervis Eroglu, PM of TRNC, have publicised a joint
declaration yesterday.
It was stated in the declaration that the reason behind the inability to
resolve the Cyprus problem was the Greek side's reluctance to give up on
dreams of turning Cyprus into a Greek island.
It was also stated that EU had made a crucial mistake in initiating
membership negotiations with the Greek Cypriots, a move which increased
tension between the two parties on the island.
The declaration also states that negotiations concerning the future of the
island could not be initiated without the recognition of two equal and
independent states representing two different communities, and the
recognition that these two states can in no way claim authority over the
other.
A reconciliation of the two sides would only be possible and consistent
through the establishment of balanced relations between Turkey, Greece, and
the two states on Cyprus, the declaration argues.
