More than 40 students detained amid YÖK

More than 40 students detained amid YÖK protest

Istanbul - Antalya, Nov 6 (DHA) - In Istanbul and southern province of Antalya, police severely intervened protests of students at Istanbul and Akdeniz universities, against Turkey’s Higher Education Board (YÖK) on its foundation anniversary, where more than 40 students were detained.

More than 30 students and a journalist were detained during the protest in Istanbul University, where police officers hancuffed them from behind. One of the police officers was heard as saying, "From now on, nothing will remain the same as they were before; we will teach this to you all" during the intervention.

Around 30 students have gathered to march towards the rectorate building in Akdeniz University, chanting slogans against YÖK’s implementations. As police blocked their way, the tension grew between students and police.Following the intervention of water cannon vehicles, nine were detained.

A police ran after a young girl refusing to be detained. The girl crossed into a pond and got in the water, at the campus. However the police insisted and waited for the girl to get out of the pond, then detained her too.

Police and two water cannon vehicles continue waiting at the campus.
