Orlando nightclub shooting: 50 killed, ISIL claims responsibility
At least 50 people were killed and 53 were injured as a gunman opened fire inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday morning. ISIL claims responsibility for the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
Afghan-origin, US citizen Omar Mateen has been identified as the gunman. He took hostages for about three hours. Officers went inside to rescue people and killed the 29-year old Mateen in a shootout.
It was reported that Mateen made a 911 call before the attack. He identified himself and pledged allegiance to the leader of the ISIL.
ISIL's news agency Amaq: “The armed attack that targeted a gay nightclub in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter.”
