Turkey expresses support of TRNC

Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) gave the
message that they would not submit to oppression on the 25. anniversary of
the Peace Maneuver. The two republics have said that they would not
negotiate unless TRNC is granted political recognition, and that if the
international community is insistent on pressurising the Turkish Cypriots,
Turkey and TRNC would accelerate efforts to unite.
The festivities marking the 25th anniversary of the Peace and Freeedom
Maneuver were celebrated with a demonstation of the "Turkish Stars" team of
paratroopers. The ceremony attracted a big crowd of Turkish Cypriots in
spite of the immense heat.
Rauf Denktas, President of TRNC and Bulent Ecevit, PM of Turkey have greeted
the crowd together after placing a ceremonial wreath at the Ataturk edifice
in Lefkose. Denktas stressed in his speech that they were ready to negotiate
with the Greek Cypriots as nothing less than a recognised state.
Ecevit expressed support of the Cypriot Republic, saying that even though it
was ignored, the existence of the Turkish Cypriot Republic was
unquestionable and he said that the support of Turkey would grow as did the
pressure on TRNC. Ecevit said, "A confederation is one of the alternatives.
The other is a unification of TRNC with Turkey."
The celebrations were attended by senior officials of the government and the
Turkish Armed Forces and political party members as well as the Secratary
General of the Turkish Presidency and the PM of Turkey.
