Turkey once more dissappointed

Greece opposed to an attempt by Germany to place Turkey on track to join the European Union in EU leaders summit.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder expressed regret that the summit had not been able to agree on proposals that would have put Turkey's candidacy for membership on an "equal footing"with ten central and eastern European countries, Cyprus and Malta.
Under German proposals, Turkey would have been invited to attend a summit of EU leaders in Helsinki in December and ministrial meetings between the bloc and applicant contries.
"I would have like to bring Turkey and the EU closer together," Mr. Schroeder said. "Some of my collegues opposed that but we will not give up," he added, arguing that the prospect of EU membership would help political and economic reform in Turkey..
Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema also said it was in Europe's interest to develop a better relation with such a large and strategically important country as Turkey.
"We cannot have a policy of closing the door in Turkey's face," he said.
