Hatay, Nov 24 (DHA) - An aircraft was shot down by F-16 of Turkey near the Syria-Turkish border, over Lattakia’s Yamadi village where mostly aircrafts Turkmens reside.

Turkish jets downed the fighter jet due to border breach, military sources said.

Military experts underlined "the plane was a Mig-23 type aircraft, used by Syrian Air Forces".

Mig-23 is a type of fighter aircraft designed in the second half of 1960s in the Soviet Union, used for attack missions.

Turkish air forces have shot down a Mig-23 affiliated to the Syrian Air Forces on March 23, 2013, due to border breach.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu spoke with Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar and Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu over the incident, announced the Prime Minister’s Office.

The PM’s Office added, Turkey was set to consult with NATO and the UN over the recent developments at the Syria border.

Akar also informed Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the incident, private broadcaster NTV reported.

Witnesses added the aircraft has crashed over the tents built in the village and pilots have landed with aid of parachutes. Doğan News Agency reporters said smoke has been rising from the region.
