World’s first Humanitarian Summit starts in Istanbul

World’s first Humanitarian Summit is being held in Istanbul and hosted by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to announce commitments to reduce humanitarian disasters.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden and many other world leaders meet in Istanbul on May 22 and 23. Merkel is also expected to meet Erdogan during her visit.

Chief of the World Humanitarian Summit Secretariat Jemilah Mahmood said on Saturday that the structure of the world humanitarian aid system was insufficient and it should be changed.

“We do need a leadership of the humanitarian aid system. This will be our most important call for the World Humanitarian Summit," Mahmood added.
