World wine production slightly rises

Öykü Altuntaş / Paris, Oct 29 (DHA) - With a slight rise of 2 percent, compared with the previous year, world wine production has been "at a good average" in 2015, announced the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

During the annual conference held at the headquarters of the OIV, the Director General Jean-Marie Aurand presented results of the study of the ros? wine sector carried out in collaboration with the Provence Wine Council (Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence, CIVP).

Italy biggest producer across the globe

Global wine production, excluding juice and musts, is likely to reach 275.7 million hectolitres (mhl) – a slight increase of 2 percent compared with 2014, according to the OIV’s early estimates.

According to the report, Italy has again become the biggest producer in the world, with 48.9 mhl, followed by France (47.4 mhl).

Also, Spain has returned to an average level of production with 36.6 mhl.

High level of production in U.S., partial decline in South America

While the United States has recorded a high level of production of 22.1 mhl for the second year running, having risen 0.5 percent against 2014, in South America, Argentine production has declined to 13.4 mhl. Meanwhile, Chile has seen record production with 12.87 mhl.

Production in Australia and New Zealand have remained almost stable for three years, with 12 mhl and 2.4 mhl respectively, excluding the exceptional 2014 production in New Zealand.

World wine consumption

"At this time of the year, we do not yet have definitive figures on wine consumption, which is nevertheless estimated within the range of 235.7 to 248.4 mhl" the report said, adding that the balance has been achieved in the market.

Focus on ros? wine

The report addressed a focus on the ros? wine sector, as its production has grown in recent years, driven by an increase in consumption.

In 2014, global production of ros? wines - excluding sparkling wines - was estimated at 24.3 mha, 9.6 percent of the world still wine production.

In this regard, four countries account for 80% percent of production: France (7.6 mhl in 2014), Spain (5.5 mhl), the United States (3.5 mhl) and Italy (2.5 mhl).
