Yilmaz: 2nd round not certain

The leaders' summit in Monday is crucial. Yilmaz states they will discuss whether to withdraw the amendment motion.

Mesut Yilmaz, ANAP General Chairman, stated that the leaders would discuss whether to move on with the second tour of the voting for the amendment motion or to withdraw it. " I am not pessimistic about the second tour," said Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on the other hand, who is currently in India. Stating that the coalition partners will come together before April 5th, the date assigned for the second round of the voting for Constitutional amendment, Mr.Yilmaz said, " It would not be right for me to say something before discussing the issue further with my partners. However I do not think that this situation will lead to a chaos." Upon the question whether the refusal of the Constitutional amendment would create trouble or instability, Mr.Yilmaz said the following,
" It may cause some distress, but noting that can not be overcome. Governments are here to surmount troubles. I do not believe the results will create instability. This government has always surmounted the problems through compromise and I am hoping this problem will be overcome also through reconciliation."

Important summit

Mr.Yilmaz states that the coalition partners will be looking for solutions that will not damage instability. The following are some options that will be discussed:
       * Withdrawing the amendment motion and trying to compromise over a new name for presidency
       * Taking the 69th and 86th articles out of the motion package and voting for the 101st article only
       * Bringing on the agenda once more a time of extension for 3 years
       * Proposing presidency to Ecevit and Bahceli
