Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit told that the Republican Party leader Deniz Baykal must drop his accusation of "low profile government". "As the time closes to the end of the year, it becomes visible that the most proper dates for election were November or December. But now we have no time for this either" he said.
Mr. Ecevit told that he expresses his stance to the Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz whenever they meet. "I expressed my thoughts on the elections. This must be assessed by other parties as well. But it's welcome if the elections are held by the end of this year and a new page is opened in 1998", Mr. Ecevit was quoted as saying.
When asked if they might support a proposal by the opposition parties calling for elections in December, Mr. Ecevit said: "I won't speak on assumptions."
In a report to Milliyet, the Deputy Prime Minister also told that the country will lose half a year with the resignation of the government at the end of the year. Mr. Ecevit, who stated that the Democratic Left Party doesn't consider withdrawing from the government, pointed to the difficulties Turkey will face with a government that fails in performances.
