Capital punishment provides immunity to mafia

       Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit told that capital punishment must be dropped because mafioso take the shield of immunity due to existence of death penalty in Turkey.
       In yesterday's group meeting of his Democratic Left Party, Bulent Ecevit told that omission of death penalty is a core principle defined by the European Union.
       "As everyone knows, necessities of this reality must be fulfilled as soon as possible. This is a must not only for the European Union but also to find crime organizations which have come to point of choking the society. Those who were involved in shadowy affairs and murders in Turkey, are being arrested outside the country. But they are not extradited to Turkey because of death penalty or sent here on condition of being judged for crimes that don't require death penalty. So some leading mafioso nearly have immunity. But we must prove that the real power is in the hands of state and justice" he was quoted as saying.
