DYP that opposed the two rounded election system, now lights green
light to holding the municipal elections in two legs.
Turhan Guven said they were open to compromise even though they had some
hesitations. Guven said they were worried that the two legged election
law could be canceled by the Constitutional Court and this would cause
the elections to be cancelled.
DYP Deputy General Chairman Hasan Ekinci also said that the two rounded
elections could cause the elections on April 18th to be canceled.
ANAP and DSP as well as BBP support the two rounded elections. In this
case DYP's support is of great importance. FP and CHP oppose the two
rounded elections, however their number in the Parliament is 199.
* CHP General Chairman Deniz Baykal: Will we pass out an election
law, three months before the elections? Now are we supposed to leave all
works and the campaign aside and pass out a new law?
* Ulku Guney from ANAP: We are ready to give any support to a two
rounded election system in the municipal elections. The two rounded
elections can be legalized with alterations in two articles.
* Uluc Gurkan from DSP: If compromise is reached and it is
possible for the Higher Election Board, I think two rounded elections
would be positive for Turkey.
* Cemil Çiçek from FP: The date of the elections have already
been determined. I think this has something to do with not being able to
accept the results of the elections.
* Mehmet Ekici from BBP: We support two rounded elections
