Fifth day in Ocalan trial

Violent protests erupted as Ocalan's lawyers attempted to read a PKK declaration.

Soldiers had to move in when violent courtroom protests erupted in the fifth day of Abdullah Ocalan trial on prison island Imrali.
The touble started as Ocalan's lawyers asked for relatives of PKK militants killed in the conflict to be admitted as co-plaintiffs like relatives of Turkish troop victims.
Defence lawyer Kemal Bilgic read out a statement saying the PKK had also suffered losses in the 15 - year armed conflict and the victims' families should be treated as co - plaintiffs.
But families of of dead Turkish soldiers who were in the courtroom and their lawyers leapt to their feet in protest. Several people made for the door, while others brandished Turkish flags and placards at the defence lawyers.
Naim Karabicak, a veteran, who lost his leg in the scuffles, grabbed the prothesis in his hand and shouted "Who will pay for this?"
The co - plaintiffs had already been incensed by a defense attempt to read out a declaration by the PKK leadership council in support of Ocalan's call for peace. Their lawyers accused Bilgic of trying to spread propoganda in the courtroom. As the tension raised the soldiers took the lawyers co - plaintiffs out of the courtroom and cordoned off the co - plaintiffs' section to prevent clashes with the defence.
The trial of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan was adjourned until Tuesday to give prosecutors time to prepare their final summing up of the charges.
The decision was announced by presiding judge Mehmet Turgut Okyay.
