Quake also hits power plants
The earthquake that hit north-eastern Turkey in the early hours of yesterday caused nation-wide damage, affecting power generators and production plants. Three thermal power plants were damaged, causing a power cut nation-wide immediately following the earthquake. Due to the cessation of power delivery lines in Izmit and Sakarya, power plants of Yatagan, Kemerkoy, and Yenikoy also stopped functioning. All computerised and electronic activity in the Aegean region was affected, including the traffic. Water deliveries were also affected, as pump systems stalled due to power shortage.
Power plants were resuming activity one by one towards yesterday afternoon. According to the declaration from the crisis centre formed, power delivery
has turned back to normal, except in Adapazarı, Izmit, the Anatolian part of Istanbul, and a part of Thrace.
Telephones were also disconnected, as telephone lines were affected.
