Quota promise to women

TBMM (the Turkish Parliament) Chairman Hikmet Cetin said obstacles before women that prevent them from entering into politics should be removed. "We must carry the women's successes in science and arts into the politics as well."
Mr. Cetin met Sırın Tekeli, the chairsperson of Association for Supporting and Educating the Female Candidates and its members at the parliament yesterday. Ms. Tekeli reminded that women who account for the half of the population are represented at the parleament at a minority level of only 2.4%. She also said their first target is to increase the number of female MPs to 55. Ms. Tekeli underlined that if this step is taken and the women prove their success, the way to complete equality will be opened. She continued her speech as follows:
"We call all the women to be members of the political parties under the slogan 'Kithed finished, now politics'. We wanted to announce this campaign which will start on March 8, under the roof of a building which has a great symbolic importance." She also requested an alteration in legislation which will allocate 33% of the all the levels of political parties for women, in a bid to start a development in compliance with the 10th article of the constitution which calls for an equality of sexes.
