Maldives President declares emergency ahead of anti-government rally

Öykü Altuntaş / Mal?, Nov 4 (DHA) - Maldives President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency on Nov. 3, ahead of a planned protest by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Yameen also gave more power to security forces to arrest suspects ahead of the protest rally, according to his spokesman.

"President Yameen has declared a state of emergency to ensure the safety and security of every citizen," his spokesman Muaz Ali said on Twitter.

The decision came two days ahead of a scheduled protest of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), whose leader Mohamed Nasheed is in jail after a widely criticized conviction under anti-terror laws.

This move will ease detainment of people, as several provisions of the constitution would be suspended, said official sources.
