Milliyet checks the pulse of Parliament

We have asked 50 parliamentarians about what they think of the Constitutional amendment motion that will open the way for Mr. Demirel to be re-elected as president for five more years.

The Constitutional amendment motion that will open the way for Suleyman Demirel to be reelected for another five more years is to be discussed at the Parliament today. Milliyet reporters talked to 50 of the 550 parliamentarians about the motion. Six deputies from DSP and MHP, two from ANAP, seven from DYP and one deputy from FP, which makes a total of 22 parliamentarians of the 50 we talked to, stated that the amendment would be realized. 16 deputies on the other hand, one from DSP, seven from ANAP, seven from FP, one from DYP, stated that they do not believe the amendment will be realized.12 parliamentarians were still indecisive. DSP general sees the amendment as a must for stability. The fact that they fear a MHP member might become the president is another reason why they do not oppose Demirel's time in office to be extended. The general opinion in MHP is that the motion will be passed out as a law. ANAP on the other hand generally thinks that the motion will not be passed as a law.
