The Turkish Airlines (THY), for the first time in its history, held its board meeting in an Eastern city, Van. THY Chairman Cem Kozlu, Director General Yusuf Bolayirli, Deputy Director Generals and board members went to Van and discussed the current matters on the agenda.
Chairman Cem Kozlu said the reason why they went to Van for a meeting was to invesigate the THY's problems in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia and to add momentum to the daily Milliyet's campaing launched for development of the Southeastern part of the country.
The THY management considers regional airport centers which will also include airports in the Southeast. THY Director General Yusuf Bolayirli said they presented the related project to the Turkish Privatization Office Chairmanship. Mr. Bolayiryli told that the privatization office expressed positive remark for the project and thus they accelarated their efforts for the regional airport centers.
The regional airport centers aim flights between airports that are close to eachother. For example, Diyarbakir and Van will be the regional airport centers for the Southeast and there will be flights from neighboring cities to the cnters everyday if necessary.
These flights will carry passangers to centers such as Istanbul - Ankara - Izmir and Antalya. For this, regional airline companies will be founded. These companies will make domestic and external flights.
Mr. Bolayirli said there is demand for this project but added that the start date for the flights hasn't been determined for the time being.
