YSK's decision

YSKs decision

Higher Board of Elections (YSK), has rejected with a majority of votes, the independant candidacy applications of both Necmettin Erbakan and Sevket Kazan, who had been banned from politics for five years. Necmettin Erbakan, former General Chairman of the closed down Welfare Party(RP) had applied to be an independant candidate from Konya, and Sevket Kazan, the former Deputy General Chairman of RP, had applied to be an independant candidate from Bilecik.
In the decleration made at he Board's meeting yesterday, Tufan Algan, Chairman of YSK, has said the following:
" Mr.Erbakan and Mr.Kazan's applications to be independant candidates from Konya and Bilecik have been examined by our board. Their applications have been rejected with a majority of the votes, with he grounds that it is against the articles of the Political Parties Act."
Stating that Kazan's and Erbakan's applications have been rejected as they are found against the 69th article of the Constitution and the 95th article of the Political Parties Act, Chairman representative of YSK Sabri Coskun has said, " We have made our decision. What will happen now, is to be considered later"
Reminding that the 79th article of the Constitution does not allow for an appeal to be made to another institution against the decision of YSK, Coskun said "It's up to them" upon the question on how Erbakan and Kazan will go on with their political lives.
Cemil Cicek, Deputy General Chairman of the Virtue Party on the hand stated that YSK was an institution to control the elections and said the following:
" Even though I do not find the decision democratic, there is nothing to be done, but accept the decision. I do not find it right that people's political rights can be taken away as we are about to enter the 21st century. However I respect the decisions of the judiciary institution."
