Turkeys YouTube ban violated freedom of expression

Strasbourg, Dec 1 (DHA) - Turkey had violated conventions on freedom of expression, by blocking access to YouTube platform for more than two years, urged the European Court of Human Rights.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has banned Twitter and YouTube in March 2014, after the spread audio recordings accusing Erdoğan and his inner circle within a large graft probe that has shaken Turkey.

YouTube had been banned from May 2008 to October 2010, after 10 videos had been deemed "insulting the memory" of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic.Three Turkish law teachers had taken the case to the court in 2010.

"Blocking without a legal basis users’ access to YouTube infringed the right to receive and impart information" the statement of the European Court of Human Rights said.

"The court also found that there was no provision in the law allowing the domestic courts to impose a blanket blocking order on access to the Internet, and in the present case to YouTube, on account of one of its contents" it added.
